Eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a surgery that corrects the upper and/or lower eyelids for a more open and vibrant look and a more youthful appearance.

Surgery for lower eyelids (under-eye surgery) is relevant when you are bothered by bags under your eyes, excess skin or deep wrinkles under the eyes. Often, these signs are the result of ageing, although they can also be genetic.

Surgery for upper eyelids (sometimes called a double eyelid surgery or a hooded eye surgery) can be performed to remove the excess skin of the drooping eyelids that creates a sad and tired look. In addition, drooping eyelids can also cause physical discomfort by reducing the range of vision and impairing visual function (blepharochalasia). In this case, double eyelid surgery improves both aesthetic and health function.

Upper and lower eyelid surgery can be performed in one surgery.

The process of surgery

Upper eyelid surgery is performed under local anaesthesia. Duration of the surgery is about 1 hour. During this surgery, an incision is made in the eyelid crease (the deepest part of the upper eyelid), removing excess skin.

Lower eyelid surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The surgery takes about 1-1.5 hours. In case of excess skin, the incision is made under the lower eyelashes and is, therefore, barely visible. If there is no excess skin, the incision is made on the inner surface of the eyelid to remove the fat bags. At the same time, facial fat grafting can be performed on the face (cheeks).

If the upper and lower eyelids are done together, general anaesthesia is used.

Before surgery

The position of the eyebrows is also assessed during the consultation. If they are drooping, an endoscopic brow lift is often performed together with upper eyelid correction.

Post-surgery period

The post-surgery period for these surgeries is usually not difficult. The first few days after a surgery, it may be difficult to close your eyes completely. The patient can go home the same day but it is recommended not to return to work for about 7-10 days.

Slight swelling and bruising of the eye area, dryness, itching, tearing and sensitivity to bright light may occur for 2-3 weeks after surgery. Cooling compresses are recommended to relieve these conditions.

Contact lenses are not recommended for the first few days, and sunglasses are recommended for about 1-2 weeks to protect the skin around the eyes from UV rays. For the same amount of time, you should try not to touch the eye area to keep it clean and dry. Physical activity should be avoided for 4-6 months. The sutures are removed 7-10 days after surgery. It is recommended to avoid UV light (sun, solarium) until the scars are pink.

Surgical risk

The risk of an eye lift surgery is not high, but adverse effects to anaesthesia, eye irritation, wound infection, bleeding, scar enlargement, and slight asymmetry may occur. All these risks are usually avoided by following the surgeon’s recommendations.
