Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty is a surgery that corrects the inner and outer labia. This surgery gives the labia a more symmetrical, shapely, and youthful appearance and can resolve associated physical problems such as discomfort during sports or sexual intercourse.
One of the most common surgery procedures is reducing the inner labia to smaller than the outer labia.
Labiaplasty may be relevant when:
- The aesthetic appearance of the labia is unsatisfactory: the size of the labia, the length of the inner or outer labia, skin discolouration.
- Discomfort during sexual intercourse: pain, irritation, etc.
- Discomfort when exercising.

The process of labiaplasty
Labiaplasty surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and takes about one hour. A longitudinal incision is made during the surgery. Excess tissue is removed from the inner labia, correcting the labia.
Labiaplasty leaves minimal scarring.
Before surgery
During the consultation, the expectations of the surgery are discussed, and depilation is required before the surgery.
Post-surgery period
Patients can usually go home the same day after surgery, and it is recommended to return to work a few days or a week later. Swelling and pain may be felt immediately after labiaplasty, but these symptoms will subside in the first few weeks. Special underwear should be worn for a few weeks during the labiaplasty recovery process. It is recommended that you avoid the sauna or swimming pool for at least one month, not use tampons, and not exercise. Prolonged sitting should be avoided, and sexual intercourse should be avoided for 6-8 weeks.
Surgical risk
The risk of complications is extremely low, but bleeding, infection, asymmetry, wound breakdown and prolonged wound healing can occur. These complications are usually avoided by following the surgeon’s recommendations after surgery.
Results
The first results are visible after swelling, and the final result is visible after 3 months.
Frequently asked questions
Can labiaplasty affect sensitivity during sexual intercourse?
Yes, but the changes in sensitivity are usually temporary while the tissues and nerves heal during the labiaplasty recovery process. That is why it is recommended to avoid having intercourse for at least 6-8 weeks after surgery. Once the healing process is complete, most patients do not notice any significant changes in sensitivity – only a reduction in discomfort.
Is the result of labiaplasty long-lasting? Can changes occur after a while, and is the surgery needed to be repeated?
Labiaplasty is a long-lasting procedure; in most cases, patients enjoy the results for many years. However, hormonal changes, weight gain (or loss), pregnancy, childbirth and the ageing process can affect the shape and size of the labia and the elasticity of the skin.
Is labiaplasty only performed when there is discomfort, or is it also performed for aesthetic reasons?
Body plastic surgery helps to solve both aesthetic and functional problems that cause discomfort, and labiaplasty is no exception. The most common reason why patients choose this surgery is pain and discomfort when exercising, wearing tight clothing or having sexual intercourse. However, some women choose labiaplasty for aesthetic reasons, to improve the appearance of the genitals. In both cases, the surgery helps to achieve the desired results and, at the same time, contributes to a better quality of life and greater self-confidence.
Can labiaplasty affect the use of tampons and other hygiene products during menstruation?
During the healing period, it is particularly important to follow the doctor’s instructions to avoid infections and complications, so it is recommended to avoid using tampons or menstrual cups and to temporarily replace them with sanitary pads. Once the healing period is over, you can return to your normal routine and choose the hygiene products you want.
