Fat transfer breast augmentation

Fat transfer breast augmentation

Fat transfer breast augmentation involves extracting fat from a donor area, such as the abdomen, waist, or thighs. This fat is then injected into the breasts to enhance their size and shape. This breast augmentation method is ideal for patients considering liposuction, offering a double benefit. Body contours are refined, and breast shape is enhanced in a single procedure.

Fat transfer breast augmentation is suitable when:

  • Breast enlargement is wanted.
  • The aim is to flatten asymmetrical (unequal-sized or shaped) breasts.
  • Breast lifts without implants are relevant for restoring the former shape of the breasts after pregnancy or breastfeeding, after weight loss or during the ageing process.

Fat transfer breast augmentation gives a very natural result. However, it is more suitable for women who want to increase their breasts by one size rather than two or more. Breast augmentation with own fat is also not an option for women with a slender build, as the fat tissue may be insufficient.

Sometimes, a hybrid technique is used for breast reconstruction surgery, where smaller implants are chosen and the breasts are filled with fat.

The process of fat transfer breast augmentation

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and takes about 3 hours.

Breast augmentation consists of several steps. First, liposuction is performed from the donor site. During liposuction, the body fat is extracted in such a way that the living cells are not damaged and are successfully reattached to the rest of the body. The liposuctioned fat is then specially processed and the surgeon then injects the fat into the breasts using a special instrument – a cannula – in extremely small amounts.

It is important to know that some of the fat cells in the body that are transplanted usually do not heal (on average, only about 30-50% of the fat heals), which is why hypercorrection – a surgery that transplants a larger amount of fat – can often be performed. For the same reason, multiple surgeries may sometimes be necessary to achieve the maximum aesthetic result.

Before surgery

It is recommended to perform a breast echoscopy before surgery.

Post-surgery period

Patients can go home the day after surgery and return to work a few days later.

Unlike breast augmentation with implants, the post-surgery period after fat transfer breast augmentation involves not only the healing of the breast but also the healing of the donor part of the body from which the fat was suctioned. Generally, liposuction is a well-tolerated surgery, which may be followed by bruising and swelling, as well as numbness, for about a week or two. Healing is also directly related to the amount of liposuction: the more liposuction, the more bruising and swelling may occur and the longer the healing time.

Bruising, swelling, mild pain, and tenderness are common during healing after a breast lift or augmentation. These symptoms should ease within a few weeks.

It is recommended to return to physical activity after a few weeks at the earliest, and it is not recommended to sleep on your stomach or to raise your arms suddenly during the healing process. Avoid active sports for 2-3 months after surgery, do not follow a restrictive diet or smoke.

Surgical risk

Fat transfer breast augmentation surgery avoids the risk of rejection by transplanting cells from the same patient. As with any surgery, bleeding, infection, and pain may occur, along with fluid buildup, lumps, bumps, or nodules. Increased sensitivity in the chest area is also possible. All these complications can usually be avoided by following the surgeon’s recommendations after surgery.
